Data Compression Feature of Chrome Mobile

Google today announced a new updated version (v32) of the Chrome mobile browser for Android and iOS. This version brings various new features including Data Compression functionality.

The Data Compression feature is disabled by default, and users can turn on it from the Settings > Bandwidth management > Reduce data usage. Once enabled, Chrome starts data compression quite similar to Opera Mini and Amazon’s Silk browser on Kindle Fire devices.

Chrome now delivers compressed and optimized content on user’s devices, which results faster browsing experience and data saving for the users. Chrome team claims to reduce bandwidth consumption by up to 50%, which could be a boon for the users having slower internet connectivity or costly data plan.

Opera Mini vs Chrome: Which is better

Opera Mini is a complete proxy browser. It heavily compresses all types of content before delivering to the users. Hence, it doesn’t support much of JavaScript and other advanced web elements (like Web Fonts etc.). This is why Opera Mini reduces data consumption by up to 90%. In fact, it uses OBML to deliver compressed content. It is good for the basic sites like this blog, but not for dynamic and content rich sites.

On the other hand, Chrome just compresses & optimizes the contents like images, HTML files, and works fine for the web applications like Gmail. So, you should not compare compression features of Opera Mini and Chrome mobile, as they work in different manners.

  1. after using opera mini for really long, I am finally moving to Chrome now. Data compression in Chrome is better than opera mini as it loads the actual version of site and not strip down the content just for loading them faster.

I would say that the compression in opera mini kills the website by removing heavy contents, which defeats the purpose of browsing. Thanks for your explaining article.

  2. opera have the answer with opera max. max work with all type of apps not just web browser.

My wish Opera max will available for PC/laptop too. Mobile data 4G LTE very fast but for limited qouta only.
